Erstwhile Pakistan cricket captain and now chairperson of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) political party Imran Khan has spoken of his dream for a new Pakistan. His dream wasn’t in the same league as Martin Luther King’s 1963 “I have a Dream” speech, but his sense of injustice is just as powerful.
His speech at a rally in Shujabad, Pakistan played it straight and direct. There was no mincing his words.
I assure you that if my government comes to power we will not take orders from the US like the zombies sitting in the power annals of Islamabad and Lahore.
Metaphors In This Imran Khan Speech
His speech included several rhetorical flourishes. A metaphor was used to signal change:
…tsunami of change
This wasn’t an obvious metaphorical link given Pakistan’s recent flood water problems and it certainly carries some devastating consequences.
We also heard some good contrasts and not this, but that statements. Every politician’s favourite device:
I envision a Pakistan that provides employment not only for all of its own people but also for the people who right now are working abroad.
and,
I will not only finish corruption, I will eradicate it from the root.
His previous captaincy of the Pakistan cricket team is an advantage. But, he has a long way to go before his political party makes serious headway in Pakistan. His tactical skills from his playing days are no doubt still relied on. He won’t be stumped or caught out that easily. But speeches and rallies can only improve his league position.
