Mariah Carey learned a hard lesson about public speaking this week. Her acceptance speech at the Palm Springs International Film Festival was marred by her having one too many glasses of champagne while she waited for the awards.
Winning the award for best breakthrough actress for her role in “Precious”, was some considerable achievement. Her speech wasn’t. Still, she knew that she’d made a small mistake and immediately explained the situation. Well done!
The message for anyone who might need to make a speech during an event is to lay off the champagne (or other tipple) until it’s very safe to assume that your public speaking services aren’t needed! And if anyone still insists, politely demur and get well away from the microphone.
