The FIFA 2010 World Cup

With hours to go before the first match starts in the FIFA World Cup 2010 the DVD rental business, LoveFilm, has announced the winners of a customer competition. It’s a competition to find the top ten motivational  movie speeches of all time.

According to their customers the top ten motivational speeches are:

  1. Coach Tony D’Amato’s “inch by inch” speech (Al Pacino) – Any Given Sunday (1999)
  2. Aragorn’s Black Gate speech (Viggo Mortensen) – Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King (2003)
  3. William Wallace’s “freedom” speech (Mel Gibson) – Braveheart (1995)
  4. Mikey Walsh’s “Down here it’s our time” speech (Sean Astin) – The Goonies (1985)
  5. Rocky’s speech to his son (Sylvester Stallone) – Rocky Balboa (2006)
  6. King Leonidas’s “this is where we hold them” speech (Gerard Butler) – 300 (2006)
  7. John Keating’s “carpe diem” speech (Robin Williams) – Dead Poet’s Society (1989)
  8. Rick Gonzalez’s “our deepest fear” speech (Timo Cruz) – Coach Carter (2005)
  9. Elizabeth Swann’s “hoist the colours” speech (Keira Knightley) – Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World’s End (2007)
  10. Jerry Maguire’s “help me help you” speech (Tom Cruise) – Jerry Maguire (1996)

LoveFilm has announced that it’s sent the England Football team manager, Fabio Capello copies of each DVD. A good move, but I’m sure that Mr Capello has already worked through several drafts!

Is this the right list? Probably for a modern UK or American audience it’s right. It’s certainly a modern list…with the oldest film being the 1985 movie, “The Goonies.”

Would you have included Paul Scofield’s 1966 performance in “A Man for All Seasons”? Or how about, Laurence Olivier’s 1944 performance in Henry V? Or how about something from the rich culture of Italy…with the subtitles, obviously.
