  • Get to Grips with Your Resignation Speech

We don't normally expect your resignation speech to be associated with a conspiracy. And politicians are no different. Since your typical politician, confronted with a conspiracy theory, will deny its existence. That's because the very mention of a conspiracy disconcerts them. The Gunpowder plot, perhaps? And it's something we've grown used to, certainly since 2020. But of course conspiracy theories existed long before then. Just think JFK. And they still do now, apparently.

Get to grips with your resignation speech

How to Get to Grips with Your Resignation Speech

Since this morning we came across something very odd. That's when the Conservative party leader, Kemi Badenoch, was presented with evidence of a conspiracy within her party. In Parliament no less! And the evidence?

Well, it appears to be a resignation speech. Robert Jenrick's goodbye speech.

Resignation Speech Discovered in Parliament

Yes, a resignation speech, purporting to be a speech prepared by Robert Jenrick, the shadow Justice Minister, was discovered by one of his aides. In his office. On his desk. And the aide promptly delivered the very speech and the whole story to Kemi Badenoch.

Treacherous aide? Or a loyal aide? Who gets to decide? But no doubt they'll be well-rewarded by the Conservative party hierarchy.

So the leader of the Conservative party, presented with Jenrick's draft resignation speech, promptly chose to sack the unfortunate man from the shadow cabinet and then proceeded to exile him as a member of the Conservative's party. His fate was sealed by his undelivered speech.

Now we've come across lost speeches before. And even the wrong speech. But this hapless Conservative resignation speech affair tops the lot.

All in all, very, very dramatic stuff. Now this is not the usual fare for a resignation speech.

It's Your Resignation Speech. Own it

Typically a resignation speech is delivered on your terms. It's delivered with the timing that you choose. And it's certainly delivered with your choice of venue. A good example is the Nicola Sturgeon resignation speech. Surprising. But eloquently done.

But above all, you want to ensure that you keep your resignation speech private. You don't want to disclose it to anybody before you get to deliver it. And it matters. It matters because it's your speech. It's personal and it's special to you. Not some parliamentary aide. And it's definitely a private matter until you get to deliver it.

And once you've delivered your resignation speech, move on. Move on from what you've left behind and crack on with a new beginning.
