Keir Starmer gave a much publicised relaunch speech last week; much publicised by His Majesty's Labour government publicity merchants. Now typically when we come across a relaunch we often think of a product relaunch or more realistically a product launch. Because presumably to have a relaunch you need a launch in the first place?
And that perhaps is the problem that Keir Starmer, the Prime Minister, faced last week. If there was a launch to the Labour government in July then it was a lacklustre affair and nobody really noticed.
Certainly we had the September miserable speech in the garden at number 10 Downing Street and that certainly wasn't a launch, was it?
Plan for Change | The Relaunch Speech
So last week's speech at the Pinewood film studios, billed by everybody in the Labour Party and the minority government as a relaunch speech was an equally insipid affair. Not really a reset. And certainly not a great reset.
So what do you need for a relaunch speech? Well it's probably the same mix as a proper launch speech.
Thus, you need to be clear about your objectives; you need to be clear about your plan. And you need to set out the external environment and how you intend to work within it. You also need to set out some measurable attainment goals. Plus, you need to specify who is responsible for actions and activities and, you need to map out the costs.
Relaunch Speeches Need Tangible Benefits to Deliver
But above all you need to map out the tangible benefits. That's because you need to show people what they will gain from a product, a service or indeed this excuse for a government. And that perhaps is the missing item in this Keir Starmer relaunch speech.
Examples of some good launch speeches will include the iOS 4.1 presentation efforts of the late Steve Jobs at Apple. Others have proved fun-filled, such as the Tesla launch presentation in 2019. And the launch event for the Nintendo 3DS in 2011 came close to disaster. Yes, it really does pay to focus on the fundamentals. And, last of all, the Lord Rose speech that launched the Britain Stronger in Europe political campaign in 2015 proved incredibly dull, though rich with statistics.
