Repetition is key to a good speech, and that typically involves exploring old material and visiting previous scenarios in addition to repeating words and phrases. Equally important to a good speech is not allowing an interrupted speech to get the better of you.
And last week in Butler, Pennsylvania, we saw the two of these themes come together. Because Donald Trump revisited Butler, Pennsylvania, where he had the chance to repeat his key points, his key material, and the scenarios that he'd already visited on his last visit. A visit that had a tragic conclusion, leaving one man dead and many others seriously injured.
But, importantly, whilst it's taken three months to recover from his last interrupted speech in Butler. He's now finished the speech.
Repetition is Key to Your Success
He effectively carried on where he left off. His speech to the 80,000 capacity crowd was pretty much as anyone might expect. However, he was also joined on stage by Elon Musk of Tesla, Space X and X.
And what a crowd-pleaser he was. Since he proved to be full of energy, he had a good stage presence and he's no slouch at speaking. Yes, we do remember his shattering experience at the Cybertuck launch presentation.
He didn't use notes, and he didn't use an autocue (teleprompter). Yes, some of his mannerisms were a trifle odd, but as a speaker, Elon Musk did well at Butler.

Of course the circumstances of President Trump's interrupted speech, three months ago, can't be over-stated.
However, for most of us, an interrupted speech is quite mundane. So, an interruption because of a heckler is rare and an interruption because of an assassination attempt is an impossibility for all but the very few. Phew!
Most of us will experience an interruption caused by a noisy kitchen next door to the conference room. You can imagine the clattering plates as lunch is readied, perhaps. Yes, it's surprisingly common at hotel and banqueting venues
So, without becoming too nervous, it does pay to be prepared for public speaking problems.
Tips to Help You When You Have an Interrupted Speech
Your task as a speaker is to deal with any interruption to your speech. And these tips should help you to recover from an interruption to your speech.
- 1Pause.
- 2Appraise the situation quickly.
- 3Assess if safety is an issue, or if it's a medical event. These are rare, but they do happen. Vice=President Biden came across one of these with a speech in Louisville. The man survived.
- 4Speak to an organiser and ask them to close a door or a window.
- 5Make light of the situation with a quip to your audience along the lines of, "only 5 more minutes to lunch."
