  • It’s All Quiet On The Western Front As BAFTA Acceptance Speech Cut

Many of us might take issue with the very laborious acceptance speeches at the big awards events. But, all the same, there is something a bit distasteful with an acceptance speech cut from the 2023 BAFTA ceremony. Held this year at the Royal Festival Hall, after several years at the Albert Hall, the BAFTA event lived up to everything that was promoted beforehand.

Lesley Paterson's BAFTA Acceptance Speech Is Cut From The Broadcast

Acceptance Speech Cut From The TV Broadcast

And yes, All Quiet on the Western Front was a big winner, scooping up seven awards. However, all was not well for the Scottish screenwriter Lesley Paterson, as she saw her acceptance speech cut from the BAFTA broadcast. Now she's quite rightly feeling a bit aggrieved after all the effort and financial sacrifice that she's made for this film to get this far.

We've featured an Academy Awards 45-second rule for acceptance speeches back in 2010. And, of course Adele suffered with an acceptance speech cut short in 2012. And of course we've also featured politicians who claimed their speeches were tampered with. A Victoria Hammah communications speech and Clive Lewis complaining about an autocue plot at a Labour conference come to mind.

However, having a BAFTA acceptance speech cut from the broadcast is a first and we trust that it's not going to happen again. Is there any rationale to the broadcasters decision? Yes, certainly. It's undoubtedly a function of time and schedule. And that's perhaps the difference between the television broadcast and the world of the cinema.

Still, that's no consolation for Lesley Paterson. But we're sure that she's destined for bigger things to come at the Oscars. Good luck and all the best.

How To Give Your Acceptance Speech Without Tears

Your acceptance or thank you speech is set to be fraught. So you should be fully prepared for a brief speech…even if you don't actually win the award or get closed down by the broadcast TV! These pointers should help:

  1. 1
Keep your speech short and without controversy.
  2. 2
Thank everyone who has helped you. Use a list and make sure you achieve all the important name checks. Because when a Justin Bieber acceptance speech didn't, there was hell to pay!
  3. 3
Hint at some new projects or learning points, with some humour perhaps.
  4. 4
Remember to say thank you, and goodbye.
