Despite the differences between Julian, Gregorian, Chinese and Korean New Year we can always expect a rich crop of leaders speeches at New Year. That's probably no surprise as they have an audience of sorts during the holiday season. Typically we look forward to the regular missive from Kim Jong Un. That's missive, not missile.
We used to consider a rare New Year's speech from Kim Jong Un as normal. But then he definitely became far more loquacious than his father who had a reputation as a speechless dictator. More often than not we can expect a speech for the New Year. Although he once gave his country a 4,000 word text titled, Report on the Fifth Plenary Meeting of the Seventh Central Committee of the Workers. Heavy stuff for the New Year.
So this new year we are both pleased and disappointed in equal measure. Because Kim Jong Un managed to give a pugilistic speech at the plenary meeting of the Workers' Party of North Korea (WPK). However he hasn't given a speech at New Year for four straight years. But the content of the Worker's Party speech was definitely what we expected.
It has South Korea as a whole within the range of strike and is capable of carrying a tactical nuclear warhead.
Enough said.
Prime Minister's Speeches At New Year
We also anticipate a UK Prime Minister speech or address. But this year the current holder of that position, Rishi Sunak, managed to give a terribly weak speech at New Year. Because beyond sycophantic Conservative party MPs we couldn't discover an appreciative audience. The problem? Perhaps it's a combination of intonation, pace and pausing. Altogether it's something to work on with his speech team, since it's not yet time for another Conservative Prime Minister, is it?
@RishiSunak Your New Year speech sounds like Martin Jarvis reading Just William on BBC's Jackanory.

We also expect a Papal New Year address as a big event. But this year the not-unexpected death of former Pope Benedict XVl obviously took centre stage within the Vatican and the larger Roman Catholic church. We covered the Papal farewell speech back in 2013. So, he had a decently long retirement.
And thinking about things we've missed, we did miss the Queen's speech at Christmas. And whilst sad, we got to listen to the new King Charles speech at Christmas. That proved emotional for his audience as well as the King no doubt. Still, he's now off the mark and without the drama of the King's speech delivered by his grandfather, King George Vl.
