Telling it Straight - Tip: 01

CONFIDENT PUBLIC SPEAKING content, voice delivery and the presenter

One presentation technique that we address in PresentPerfect is the focus on the 3 main attributes of effective public speaking content, voice delivery and you, the presenter.  This month we have some presentation tips for confident public speaking.

Getting Your Message Across

PresentPerfect identifies 3 main attributes to the effective presentation the content, your voice delivery and you, the presenter.  Good public speaking involves all 3 attributes working together to the same consistent goal.

NEWS

Effective Presentation Skills

Content

bullet Relevant should be relevant to your audience.
bullet Informative - should contain suitable information to support the main purpose of the presentation.
bullet Illustrative should use graphic or descriptive illustration where possible.
bullet Factual aim to convey facts required to back up the information provided.
bullet Observation & Anecdotes use stories, anecdotes and asides that your audience can relate to.

Voice Delivery

bullet Tone change your voice tone for specific effects.
bullet Modulate alter the speed at which you present at certain times in the presentation.
bullet Pause when done properly it's superb.
bullet Volume it shouldn't be a struggle to hear you nor should it be uncomfortable to hear you!  Consider the acoustics of the presentation venue, the seating plan, the distance between you and the audience and how many people there are in the room.
bullet Language your language should be consistent with your audience's expectations.  The Women's Institute might have different expectations to the boilermakers convention.

You, The Presenter

bullet Animated aspire to be animated but not a caricature!
bullet Body language every movement you make could be subject to some interpretation.  Whether your head is up or down, whether you are looking at the slide screen and not the audience or whether your hands never move - these could imply confident speaking or a shortage of confidence.
bullet Attire your audience should be looking intently at you during your presentation. If your collar is twisted they will notice! It's not a big issue in the office but it's magnified in a presentation situation.
bullet Listening listen for audience reaction to the points you make. Consider what they are collectively saying to you then take action.
bullet Seeing gauge the impact of your presentation on the audience. Consider whether there might be issues or interest in further elaboration of a point then take action.
